Any Linux distro so far doesn't seem to have that in mind - you still need to use the command line for particular things.īefore I throw my hat in the ring and everyone starts shouting at me, I myself use Linux Mint and Windows 8.1 in dual boot. You COULD use it, but you don't have to, similar to Windows. OSX, while not Linux based, is possibly the first widely accepted Unix-based OS, all while making the more archaic aspects of unix-like OSes such as the command line not an integral part of it. TL DR: Linux is a perfect example of "too many cooks spoil the broth". This only complicates it further - having different design choices and functionalities would force the average user to relearn if they went from GNOME to KDE, causing potential confusion and overall putting them off from Linux. If Linux distros were unified, or a distro became popular enough to the point that others distros could be ditched, then perhaps you would see wider adoption.Īnother issue is the available GUIs, ie. Ubuntu solved that somewhat, being quite popular, but it is still not enough IMO. Just shows the un-unified nature of it all and only ensures it won't be widely adopted. I dislike the amount of distros available.

If there is one thing that can be said about Linux is there is no shortage of choice.

If I didn't want to pay for an OS or any Office software they are a great alternative to Windows, no question there, but I can't see them becoming a widespread replacement for Windows, which might not be a bad thing because alternatives tend to loose their appeal when everyone gets them. I believe the word you might be looking for here is 'owned'.Īt the end of the day an extra 100Gb of disk space costs bugger all, it is no big deal to run dual boot set ups, or even a VM of Windows, but it is not fair that Linux users discredit Windows users because they won't switch, the grass is not always greener on the other side no matter what the fan boys say.įWIW, I have VM's of Ubuntu 11.04, PCBSD 10 and Linux Mint 15 on my 'Windoze' PC, I have test driven them all. What are you talking about Shane? I just pointed out (and proved) that your beloved Linux has some backwards ass implementations of stuff that is dead simple in Windows, that is not getting my nose out of joint even after I am told I need a brain transplant because I still use Windows and can't use a CLI (actually, refuse would be a better word). I'm over you can't say something without someone getting there nose out of joint.
